The Police confiscated 53 gun replicas from several vendors in Bacolod City at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, City Police Investigation and Detection Management Section head Chief Insp. Leonardo Angcon said yesterday.
Angcon said a simultaneous saturation drive was conducted at the Gaisano City Mall in Brgy. Singcang-Airport and at Luzuriaga and Gatuslao streets on complaints from concerned citizens and legitimate gun owners about rampant selling of gun replicas in these areas.
Angcon noted that the Philippine National Police headquarters has issued letter of instruction 1264 to all police units all over the country banning the sale of gun replicas in commercial establishments and streets.
Among the items the police confiscated were pellet guns and gun replica lighters, which Angcon said, are imported from Manila and Cebu .
He stressed that gun replicas are banned because they are hazardous for children and could also be used for street crimes.
In fact, he said, the Bacolod police have arrested a robbery suspect who used a toy gun replica to threaten his victims.
The confiscated items will be endorsed to the Firearm Explosives Security Agency and Guards Section while the police is monitoring other areas where selling of gun replicas is rampant, Angcon said.
He added that the Bacolod police are exerting effort to identify the distributors of these items and locate the warehouse keeping them in Bacolod , if there is any, so they could apply for a search warrant.
Aside from the intensified campaign against gun replicas, the Bacolod police is also beefing up its campaign against illegal selling of teargas and armalite telescopes.*APN
